Formerly: Flavin Grocery · J. R. Browne Grocery
Kansas City, Missouri · Founded 1887 · Building: 1901
Browne's began as Flavin Grocery in 1887, moved into its 1901 brick Kansas City store, and remains a fourth-generation Irish marketplace.
Edward and Mary Flavin, immigrants from County Kerry, opened Flavin Grocery near 27th Street and Jefferson Avenue in Kansas City in 1887. They built the brick market at 33rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in 1901, where the business still operates as Browne's Irish Marketplace. Their daughter Margaret and her husband Jim Browne continued the family line in the 1910s, and fourth-generation owners Kerry Browne and John McClain now operate the market, deli, and Irish-import business.

Browne's official history says Margaret Flavin and James R. 'Jim' Browne began continuing the family business after their marriage in 1915. A historical marker instead dates the grocery's transfer and renaming to J. R. Browne Grocery to 1917, so the exact succession and name-change year remains unresolved.

Every claim gets rated. A business's own website can never earn "documented."
KCUR, KSHB, the Kansas City Star, Irish Echo, and Browne's own history consistently identify County Kerry immigrants Edward and Mary Flavin as the 1887 founders of Flavin Grocery near 27th Street and Jefferson Avenue. The business passed through their daughter Margaret's marriage to Jim Browne, making the Browne identity a continuation of the original family line rather than an unrelated successor.
The Flavin/Browne Building historical marker and multiple local histories say Ed and Mary Flavin built the current brick store at 33rd Street and Pennsylvania in 1901 and moved their grocery there. This establishes the business's current-location lineage and building age, while the reported couple-month closure in the early 1980s means it should not be described as uninterrupted daily operation since 1901.
Current local reporting, the business's official site, and Irish-business sources identify Kerry Browne and her husband/business partner John McClain as fourth-generation owners. Later-generation relatives help in the business, but the reviewed sources do not establish fifth-generation ownership.
Browne's, KCUR, Irish Echo, Axios, and local coverage report that the Irish Trade Board told the family it was the oldest Irish family business outside Ireland. But the exact claim changes across sources—Irish business, Irish-owned business, Irish family business, North America, or worldwide outside Ireland—and no Irish Trade Board ranking or comparative record was reviewed. An Irish Echo account also reports a couple-month closure before the 1981 revival, which defeats an absolute continuous-operation formulation.
The reviewed sources consistently describe Kerry Browne and John McClain as fourth-generation owners. Fifth- and sixth-generation family members help or are learning the business, and Kerry's son Rory has expressed interest in succeeding the current generation, but the record does not support five generations of ownership or operation.
Kansas City reporting and Irish-business coverage call Browne's Kansas City's oldest retail business, and it has a well-supported 1887 origin. No citywide comparative study of active retail businesses, location changes, temporary closures, ownership succession, and business identity was reviewed, so the claim remains plausible rather than certified.
The Flavin/Browne Building Complex is the subject of a historical marker, and KCUR describes Browne's as a locally designated historic landmark. The exact designation authority and designation date should be verified before specifying whether the status is municipal, state, or national.

The Browne family took over the store in 1912.
The reviewed sources conflict: Browne's official history dates Margaret Flavin and Jim Browne's succession to their 1915 marriage, while the Flavin/Browne historical marker says the grocery passed to them in 1917 and became J. R. Browne Grocery. The exact succession and renaming year remains unresolved.

Browne's has operated continuously without interruption since 1887.
Browne's has a family business lineage dating to Flavin Grocery in 1887, but Irish Echo reports that the store had been closed for a couple of months before Kerry Browne and John McClain revived it in 1981. The register does not certify an uninterrupted-operation claim.

Browne's is owned and operated by five generations of the family.

Browne's survived because each generation adjusted the product mix while retaining the store's role as a place to buy Irish food, imports, gifts, and a deli lunch in Kansas City. The shift from Flavin Grocery to the Browne family did not break the family line: Margaret Flavin's marriage to Jim Browne carried the business into its next identity. Bob and Marjorie Browne continued it after 1955, and Kerry Browne and John McClain revived it in 1981 after a short closure, keeping the 1901 building alive as a working market rather than a purely commemorative historic site.
Ed and Mary Flavin, immigrants from County Kerry, opened Flavin Grocery near 27th Street and Jefferson Avenue in Kansas City in 1887. They built the current brick market at 3300 Pennsylvania Avenue in 1901, and their daughter Margaret and her husband Jim Browne continued the family business in the 1910s. Kerry Browne and her husband John McClain are now the fourth-generation owners of the Irish market, deli, and import shop.
No verified evidence establishes Browne's as Missouri's oldest general store. Browne's has a well-documented Kansas City business lineage to Flavin Grocery in 1887 and is one of the state's most enduring immigrant-family retail businesses, but this register has not completed a statewide comparison of older general stores, business changes, closures, and ownership lines.
Browne's is widely described as the oldest Irish family business outside Ireland, based on a reported statement from representatives of the Irish Trade Board. However, the exact scope changes among sources, and no official ranking or worldwide comparison was reviewed. The store also reportedly closed for a couple of months before its 1981 revival, so this register does not certify an uninterrupted-operation title.
Kerry Browne and her husband and business partner John McClain are fourth-generation owners of Browne's Irish Marketplace. The family line began with Ed and Mary Flavin in 1887, continued through their daughter Margaret's marriage to Jim Browne, and later passed through Bob and Marjorie Browne before Kerry and John took over in 1981.
Ed and Mary Flavin built the brick store at 33rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in 1901 and moved Flavin Grocery there from its original 27th-and-Jefferson location. The building remains Browne's Irish Marketplace home today and originally included the Flavin family's residence in an upper loft.
