I.

What earns a place

It has to still be open. Not preserved, not restored, not a museum with a gift shop — open, with someone behind the bar tonight. Continuous operation matters more than age.

II.

What gets verified

Dates come from deeds, newspaper archives, and city records — not from the building's own marketing. Where a place's own history is wrong, the correction is noted and sourced.

III.

What stays a story

Every legendary room has legends. They belong here, but they're labeled. Nothing is repeated as fact because it's been repeated often.

The house standard

Every claim gets rated

Each entry separates what survives fact-checking from what survives because it's a good story. Both are worth keeping. Only one is worth stating.

Know a room that belongs here?

Nominations come from bartenders, regulars, local historians, and owners. Send the name and the town — the research is on us. Spotted something wrong on an entry? Tell us that too.

Thanks — that's in the queue for research.
