Formerly: Skyline Drive-In (1951–1977)
McHenry, Illinois · Founded 1951 · Building: 1951
A 1951 drive-in opened as Skyline, renamed McHenry Outdoor in 1977, and saved for the digital era by a community-backed Honda Project Drive-In win.
McHenry Outdoor Theater opened as the Skyline Drive-In on July 20, 1951, with a showing of *Rogues of Sherwood Forest*. Roy J. Miller operated the original drive-in, which was renovated and renamed McHenry Outdoor Theatre in 1977. Now owned by Scott Dehn, the seasonal venue won a digital projection system through Honda’s 2013 Project Drive-In campaign and marked its 75th season in 2026.

Every claim gets rated. A business's own website can never earn "documented."
The Daily Herald, McHenry Public Library District local-history research, and Cinema Treasures identify the original operation as Skyline Drive-In, opened on July 20, 1951 with *Rogues of Sherwood Forest*. The candidate's generic May 1951 opening date was incorrect.

Cinema Treasures reports that the theater underwent renovation after the 1976 season and reopened as McHenry Outdoor Theatre on April 29, 1977.
Current CBS Chicago, Daily Herald, Chicago Tribune, and Golden Age Cinemas material identify Scott Dehn as owner and say he purchased the theater in 2000.
Honda's own 2013 release confirms that McHenry Outdoor received a digital projection system through Project Drive-In. Later reporting says theatergoers mobilized online votes and that the theater was selected as one of the national winners.
Daily Herald and Chicago Tribune 2026 coverage describe McHenry Outdoor as the only remaining drive-in in the suburbs. That claim is narrower and better supported than the candidate's broader statement about the full Chicago metropolitan area.
The theater's 2026 75th-season coverage, its same-site history, and its documented 1977 renovation/rebrand strongly support a long continuous seasonal cinema lineage. This review did not inspect a complete year-by-year operating, licensing, ownership, weather-damage, and closure record, so the continuity claim is credible but not fully audited.

The McHenry Outdoor survived because its owners and audience treated the digital conversion as a make-or-break preservation project rather than accepting the end of 35mm distribution as inevitable. Scott Dehn, who bought the theater in 2000, mobilized moviegoers to support a national Honda Project Drive-In contest, and the theater became one of the winners of a digital projection system in 2013. That rescue let a 1951 outdoor theater continue as a functioning seasonal cinema rather than becoming another redevelopment story.
McHenry Outdoor Theater opened as the Skyline Drive-In on July 20, 1951, under Roy J. Miller, with *Rogues of Sherwood Forest* as its first feature. Miller sold the theater to Stan Kohlberg in 1963, and after a 1976 renovation it reopened as McHenry Outdoor Theatre in 1977. Scott Dehn bought the theater in 2000, and community-backed voting helped it win a Honda digital projector in 2013, allowing it to continue into the digital era.
No Illinois-oldest-drive-in title has been established for McHenry Outdoor Theater in this review. It opened as Skyline Drive-In in 1951 and has an unusually long operating history, but no statewide comparison of older Illinois drive-ins, their opening dates, closures, successors, or current operations was conducted. Its clearly documented distinction is that current 2026 reporting calls it the only remaining drive-in in Chicago’s suburbs.
McHenry Outdoor Theater survived the digital transition by winning a Honda Project Drive-In projection system in 2013. Owner Scott Dehn encouraged supporters to vote for the theater in Honda’s national online contest, and McHenry was selected as one of the drive-ins to receive digital equipment. The new projector allowed the theater to keep showing first-run digital films after studios moved away from 35mm distribution.
McHenry Outdoor Theater retains its historic McHenry name, but current 2026 reporting says the theater property was annexed from McHenry into Lakemoor in 2020. Its visitor address is 1510 North Chapel Hill Road, commonly still listed with a McHenry mailing identity. Check the theater’s current website or showtime page for the most current directions and municipal details.
