The Truth-O-Meter

Every claim gets rated. A business's own website can never earn "documented."

Historic Tapoco Lodge was built in 1930 as part of the ALCOA-linked Tapoco hydroelectric-development era.

Documented

The main lodge was built in 1930, within the broader hydroelectric development created by Tallassee Power Company, ALCOA, and related entities. The lodge's historic significance is inseparable from the dam-building era, but the building itself was not constructed in 1913 and should not be described simply as worker housing.

Tapoco Lodge was built primarily to house Cheoah Dam construction workers.

The Tapoco community included worker housing for the hydroelectric projects, but current lodge history and a 2026 local report say the main lodge was built in 1930 as a private hunting-and-fishing retreat for Andrew Mellon, ALCOA executives, and guests. The lodge should not be conflated with the worker village that preceded it.

The House Angle

Why It Survives

Tapoco Lodge survived because a purpose-built corporate retreat could adapt to a different kind of traveler. The surrounding dams and worker community gave the site its infrastructure and name, while the 1930 main lodge gave executives and guests a scenic base on the Cheoah River. Expansion into a resort, later public reopening, private restoration efforts, and its appeal to motorists and outdoor travelers have allowed the property to outlive the industrial era that created it.
