Still Open America finding: Chicken Annie's Original is the best-supported holder of the "First surviving Crawford County chicken house" claim.

Holds the claim

Published histories of Crawford County's surviving chicken houses consistently list Chicken Annie's Original first, with Ann Pichler's chicken dinners dating to 1934. The recognized later chicken houses are generally dated to Chicken Mary's in 1942 or 1945, Gebhardt's in 1946, Barto's Idle Hour in 1951, Pichler's Chicken Annie's in 1970, and Chicken Annie's of Girard in 1971. This status applies only to the named surviving Crawford County chicken-house restaurant tradition and does not claim that Ann Pichler was the first person ever to cook or serve chicken dinners in the county's mining camps.

Does not hold

Chicken Mary's is a major Crawford County chicken-house restaurant, but it does not hold the first-surviving-chicken-house title. Published histories place Chicken Annie's Original chicken dinners in 1934, while Chicken Mary's publicly dates its own beginning to 1942 and other accounts cite 1941 or 1943. Chicken Mary's also documented a six-month closure in 1961, so it cannot support a continuous-operation ranking against Chicken Annie's Original.

Does not hold

Pichler's Chicken Annie's was founded in 1971, according to published Crawford County chicken-house histories. Chicken Annie's Original traces its chicken dinners to 1934 and therefore holds the earlier position in the recognized surviving chicken-house tradition. Pichler's is historically important as an independent restaurant founded by descendants of both Chicken Annie's and Chicken Mary's, but it does not hold the first-surviving-Crawford-County-chicken-house title.
