Oldest continuously operating tavern in New Jersey

Stage House Tavern occupies a Scotch Plains property whose center section dates to 1737 and later became an inn during the stagecoach era. The present Stage House Tavern location opened in 2003, and the sources reviewed do not establish uninterrupted tavern, restaurant, lodging, or liquor-service operation across the property's full history. Because no complete comparison of New Jersey's competing historic-tavern claims has been completed, the statewide oldest-continuously-operating-tavern title remains unresolved.

Rocky Hill Inn publicly traces its tavern lineage to a claimed 1745 Harrison-family license. The original license and full continuity record were not independently verified in this review, and the venue's own history says its lodging or inn function ended after World War II. Although the business says food and bar service continued, the evidence reviewed does not establish an uninterrupted tavern operation through every ownership and use change or resolve the claim against competing New Jersey taverns. The statewide oldest-continuously-operating-tavern title therefore remains unresolved.

The Cranbury Inn is associated with local accounts of a post house by 1750 and with promotional claims that two early tavern structures date to about 1750 and 1765. However, the reviewed sources also describe a 1780 Peter Perrine dwelling, a later United States Hotel, a 1920 conversion to the Cranbury Inn name, and an end to lodging in 1982. These competing building and business lineages do not establish uninterrupted tavern operation, and no complete comparison has been completed against other New Jersey venues using the same statewide claim race.
