Unresolved

J. Huston Tavern has a well-supported 1834 hospitality origin in Arrow Rock, where Joseph Huston Sr. built a brick home and began offering meals and lodging to travelers and local residents. Missouri State Parks has long promoted the site as the oldest continuously serving restaurant west of the Mississippi River. But the prior operator stopped restaurant service in early 2024, and the reviewed record only confirms a planned later-2024 reopening, not the actual reopening date or uninterrupted current operation. The broader west-of-the-Mississippi comparison also remains unresolved, so this record does not declare a winner.

Does not hold

Hays House occupies a building dating to about 1857 and has a long record of serving meals and rooms to Santa Fe Trail travelers and Council Grove residents. However, KansasTravel.org reports that the restaurant closed in December 2019 and reopened in June 2020 under new owners. That documented break means Hays House cannot literally hold a title requiring continuous restaurant operation from 1857 to the present; this review does not name another winner for the broader west-of-the-Mississippi race.
