Crater Lake Lodge

Crater Lake National Park, Oregon  ·  Founded 1915  ·  Building: 1909–1915; extensively reconstructed 1991–1995

Great Story

Crater Lake's 1915 rim lodge survived a near-collapse through a 1990s reconstruction that preserved its historic character for continued use.

Crater Lake Lodge opened in 1915 on the caldera rim of Crater Lake National Park. Built as a private Parkhurst-era visitor lodge, it deteriorated badly over decades of weather exposure and structural stress. After engineers warned in 1989 that part of the building could collapse, the lodge was closed, extensively rebuilt, and reopened in 1995 as a National Park concession hotel.

The Truth-O-Meter

Every claim gets rated. A business's own website can never earn "documented."

Original Crater Lake Lodge guest rooms used beaver board and similar paper-like wall finishes.

Documented

National Park Service rehabilitation research describes original guest-room wall and ceiling finishes as tar-paper-like material supplemented by beaver board. The lodge's original interior construction was comparatively inexpensive and did not match the later rustic image recreated during rehabilitation.

The 1990s project simply demolished the old lodge and replaced it with an unrelated replica.

The rehabilitation was radical, but it was not merely a demolition-and-replica project. The Great Hall wing was dismantled and rebuilt; much of the rest was gutted; original masonry was salvaged for reuse; and new structural, utility, and life-safety systems were integrated into the reconstructed lodge.

By 1989, engineers warned that the Great Hall wing might collapse and the lodge closed. Archival descriptions record that the building had been scheduled for demolition before public pressure helped save it through reconstruction and rehabilitation.

The House Angle

Why It Survives

The lodge survives because public resistance to demolition and National Park Service stewardship transformed a failing building into a major rehabilitation project. The 1991–1995 work did more than refresh the old lodge: the Great Hall wing was dismantled and rebuilt, most of the rest was gutted, salvaged masonry was reused, and modern steel, utilities, and life-safety systems were installed. The result retained the historic setting and visual identity while making the hotel usable under modern safety standards.

Frequently Asked

Questions & Answers

When was Crater Lake Lodge built and opened?

Crater Lake Lodge was developed beginning in 1909 and opened to visitors in 1915. The lodge was extensively reconstructed between 1991 and 1995 after serious structural problems forced its closure.

Was Crater Lake Lodge almost demolished in the 1980s?

Yes. Engineers determined in 1989 that the Great Hall wing was unsafe and might collapse, and the lodge was closed. Public opposition to demolition helped lead to a major rehabilitation project that began construction in 1991 and reopened the lodge in May 1995.

Who owns and operates Crater Lake Lodge?

The National Park Service owns Crater Lake Lodge as part of Crater Lake National Park. The current concession operator is ExplorUS, operating locally as ExplorCraterLake, which manages lodging and other visitor services under the National Park concession system.

Is Crater Lake Lodge the original 1915 building?

The lodge retains its 1915 identity and historic setting, but much of its structure was rebuilt in the 1990s. The Great Hall wing was dismantled and rebuilt, much of the rest was gutted, salvaged masonry was reused, and modern steel and safety systems were added before the 1995 reopening.
