Salina, Kansas · Founded 1922
A six-stool Salina burger stand, open since 1922 and still serving its compact onion-burger specialty.
The Cozy Inn opened in downtown Salina in spring 1922, only months after White Castle began operating in Wichita. Bob Kinkel bought the tiny restaurant shortly after it opened and, with his wife Kathryn, became central to its long history. Today Steve Howard owns and operates the continuing restaurant at 108 North Seventh Street.

Every claim gets rated. A business's own website can never earn "documented."
Kansas Sampler and KSAL both date the restaurant's opening at 108 North Seventh Street to spring 1922. The exact day and the identity of the initial proprietor are not resolved in the sources reviewed.
The restaurant opened in spring 1922, but Kansas Sampler and KSAL say Kinkel bought it within about three months. Those sources do not establish him as the initial founder, and KSAL notes that the original proprietor's identity is uncertain.
Clio's local-history entry reports that a larger grill was installed between 1978 and 1984. The restaurant may preserve an older cooking style or surface, but the candidate's assertion of continuous use of the original 1922 grill is contradicted by the available account.
Current descriptions of the restaurant say fries are not offered and that customers can buy chips with their burgers. This review did not locate a complete menu archive proving that fries were never served at any point since 1922.
Kansas tourism/history descriptions repeatedly characterize the restaurant as a six-stool diner or hole-in-the-wall. The sources support limited counter seating but do not establish that all stools or other interior elements are original to 1922.
Kansas Sampler describes The Cozy Inn as opening months after White Castle's Wichita restaurant and identifies a separate ownership chain: Kinkel, later Kinkel/Pickering family operation, the 1996 local purchasers, and Steve Howard. This record does not show franchise affiliation with White Castle.
Bob Kinkel founded The Cozy Inn in 1922.

The Cozy Inn still uses its original 1922 grill.
A local-history entry says that a larger grill was installed between 1978 and 1984. The restaurant's long-running burger technique should not be equated with continuous use of the original equipment.

The Cozy Inn has remained legible as a very small, focused restaurant: its longstanding identity centers on small onion burgers, counter seating, and takeout by the bag. Its history includes changed ownership and at least one major grill replacement, so the meaningful continuity is the business, location, and specialized menu tradition—not an unchanged set of original equipment.
The Cozy Inn opened at 108 North Seventh Street in Salina in spring 1922. Kansas Sampler and KSAL report that Bob Kinkel bought the restaurant within about three months, so he should be identified as an early owner rather than a securely documented original founder.
Steve Howard owns and operates The Cozy Inn. The Salina Journal identified Howard as current owner and operator during the restaurant's 100th-anniversary coverage in 2022, and Kansas Sampler says he purchased the business in 2007.
No evidence supports that claim. A local-history entry says a larger grill was installed between 1978 and 1984, so the current grill cannot accurately be described as the original 1922 grill without more specific equipment documentation.
Current descriptions say The Cozy Inn does not serve French fries and offers chips with its small onion burgers. That describes the present menu; this review did not establish whether fries were absent for the restaurant's entire history.
No. The Cozy Inn was an independent Salina restaurant, although it opened only months after White Castle began in Wichita and shared the small onion-burger format. Kansas Sampler's ownership history identifies a separate succession of Cozy Inn owners rather than any White Castle franchise relationship.
